User Reviews about Olive Drab Venturer Survivor Shoulder Bag

This isn't a messenger bag. It won't hold things like full size documents or ring binder notebooks. But it's a great bag for smaller things.

I did check to see if my netbook (approx. 10.5" x 7") would fit in the bag. It does, like it was made for it. And there's still room for a cell phone, pens, a few other accessories, and maybe a book or two.

The adjustable shoulder strap is nice and long, but it isn't double stitched to the bag, only single stitched. I'll keep my eye on that, and maybe add another row of stitching or re-sew it if necessary.

Since it is inexpensive, I didn't mind making an alteration soon after I got it. When the bag is fully packed and expanded, the flap won't reach the clasps. I made a couple of small cuts in the lining behind the male clasps so I could get to them, unbent the tabs, and relocated them about halfway up the front of the bag. Now the flap will clasp when the bag is fully stuffed. -- Great fit for a netbook!
I bought this to replace a Gap messenger bag that decided to self destruct last summer. The two bags could not be more different. I mean that in a good way. This bag keeps a well-defined shape, mostly due to it's heavy-duty material and construction. The placement of the strap is such that the bag doesn't collapse when slung. As noted by other reviews, it is smaller than it looks on this page. I personally like the downgrade, as my former satchel was HUGE compared to this. The fabric is ballistic cotton. Plenty of compartments, but that's where I start to complain.

The only downfall of this bag deals with the compartment closures. Top left two, outside flap, are fine enough, big metal snaps. The third pocket, on the right, has a zipper entirely too small for the size. Mind you, I use that to my advantage for things I want to stay put, but it would have zipper anyway. Regardless, it's going to be for small things only. The lower pocket is ideal for sunglasses but suffers a complication: the buttons are secure enough to require force to open them and the velcro is not grippy enough to trust. The compartments under the flap suffer from being just too open. I've had a few things come out, but I've lost nothing yet. Looking at adding aftermarket closures to contain them. The big compartment is regulated by a single narrow closing strap. I've found it helps to keep stuff in there. It's secure and big enough to store my camera's Pelican case. There's also one snapping side pocket, capable of holding something the size of a soda can or smaller.

Overall, minus my picky complaints about snaps and zippers, this is a really good deal. I'd buy one as a gift, too. -- This is no musty old ball sack.
The bag in itself is cute and holds all my junk (I carry a lot of junk) but it is badly constructed. The front flap (with all the pockets) covers over the two deep compartments of the body and locks the purse "close" with two twisting knobs. The left knob broke the first day I received the bag. Now it hangs kinda weird and lopsided. Also, there's a metal stick thing where the knob should be. Since the knob came off randomly when I was out, I lost it and can't even glue it in place to hide the metal stick thing. Not really cool and I can't figure out what to do as a "fix." Additionally, there's a side pocket that snaps to close (better idea) on the right side that's perfect for my cell phone. I really liked its placement but the pocket tore within the first week. So far nothing else has broken. I can deal with the pocket tearing (sewed it back up) but I really hate that the knob broke. -- Cute...but not well made
I'm very glad that I found and ordered this shoulder bag. I'm now able to keep my things organized in this one multipocketed bag instead of having to rumage through piles of items on my car seats. It has a pocket that perfectly holds my cell phone, one for my wallet, and room for my nav system, all my power/recharge cords, pens, compact camera, and more. And I can just throw it over my shoulder (using the adjustable strap) and take off without leaving anything in my car to tempt the bad guys. And instead of having a flap that just folds over and can allow things to fall out like many laptop sized bags, this smaller bag can be easily fastened shut while still allowing access to the pocket that I use for my cellphone (which if you look carefully at the picture you will see said pocket toward the bottom of the picture on the flap between the fasteners.) I ordered the olive drab bag because it looked the most "armyish" and the least purse-like. -- A great find!
